Third Level Graduate Programme

Visas for graduates in Ireland: how does it work?

International students are looking for a unique chance to live permanently in Europe. This opportunity exists and it is within your reach. Ireland encourages non-European students to come to the country by  granting of a special visa, the so-called Third Level Graduate Programme. This programme allows International students (non-Europeans) to work legally in Ireland for a period of up to two years after their graduation. There is also the possibility of obtaining a permanent work visa once students participate in the programme. This initiative is attracting qualified professionals to several areas, especially those with a high demand in the country, such as information technology, pharmaceuticals, finance, among others.  Every student who completes an academic course recognised by Irish education bodies, whether undergraduate or postgraduate, can take part in this initiative.

Why Ireland is attractive to international students

The Irish economy has been booming. Last year, the country’s GDP grew by about 7.3%. The indicators were driven by multinationals that see Ireland as a great country to invest in. Companies like Facebook, Google and PWC have expanded their operations in Europe.  Such an expansion increases the demand for qualified professionals. Depending on the area, a graduate can quickly enter the labour market, leading to a possible permanent visa offer in the country.

The per capita income of the country is another great advantage. According to data extracted  from the world bank, Ireland in 2016 had a PCI of US$ 64k per year, which is the second best performance within the European Community, ahead of countries like the United Kingdom (US $ 40k), Germany (40k) and ahead of the overall European average ($ 36k). Another positive point is the expectation of an aggregate salary during a professional career. In an article published in 2014 by The Irish Times investing in a college degree program in Ireland may lead to significantly higher earnings over the course of a professional life: an estimated €350k more, compared with a professional without a college degree. The text presents data from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). For this reason, a € 15k investment in a quality education could potentially yield an aggregate profit of over 2200% over the course of your career.

Studying and competing in the Irish job market

The first step to join an Irish university is to improve your knowledge of the English language. With the technology available nowadays, it has become easy to learn the Saxon language.  The proper use of the English language is critical to being accepted onto a college or university programme. Exams of language proficiency like IELTS, Cambridge, TOEFL among others, are essential for admission in the best universities and leverage your career. Brazilian, Mexican and Chilean undergraduate degrees can be accepted in universities across Ireland without much bureaucracy. Generally, it is necessary to present an official translation of your academic records. However, additional academic assignments and interviews may be required as part of the admission process of some courses.

The Third Level Graduate Program grants a temporary one-year working visa after the completion of a level 8 undergraduate/ higher diploma (usually these courses have a duration of three to four years ) and two years working visa is granted to those who complete a level 9 or higher postgraduate programme.  Postgraduate courses offer more advantages as the cost of these degrees can be less than a quarter of the final value of an undergraduate degree. Also, a student who completes a Taught Masters in Ireland is more likely to be absorbed by the job market as this sort of programmes are desired by employers.

World Excellence Courses

There are several opportunities to leverage your career in Ireland. Higher education institutions in the country have academic programmes of world excellence, as attractive as courses offered in the UK and US, but at a much more competitive cost. The Third Level Graduate Program is undoubtedly a great shortcut for students who want to reside permanently on the Emerald Isle.
